The Surprising Props Actors Have Swiped From Movie Sets
For a wide range of reasons, movie budgets have only gotten larger and larger over the last 50 years. In 2000, the average budget of film production stood around $50 million. In the last ten years, those budgets have ballooned to $100, $200, and even $300 million. Actor and crew salaries have increased, production insurance premiums have increased, travel is more expensive, and props are becoming more elaborate. Speaking of that last one, with so many moving pieces during production, who's to notice if the film's lead star swipes a few (or several) souvenirs from their memorable time on set?
Reese Witherspoon in 'Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde'
In Legally Blonde 2, Reese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrolls in law school to win back her ex-boyfriend. The film was released back in 2003. As part of her contract, Witherspoon kept her character's entire wardrobe. In a 2019 television interview with Graham Norton, Witherspoon revealed: "I've never touched them [since] and then on the 15th anniversary I took them all out of storage and tried them all on," Witherspoon said. "Some of them fit, some of them didn't, and then I, yeah, I showed them all to my daughter and it was really cool."

During the same interview with Graham Norton, actresses Julie Andrews and Jennifer Aniston were sitting next to Witherspoon, amazed by her movie haul. Aniston specifically asked about "how many pairs of Jimmy Choos" she managed to snag. Witherspoon playfully responded "77... I had it written in my contract, I have all of them." If you're unfamiliar, Jimmy Choo is a designer brand that rose to fame during the early 1990s. One pair will often retail for $500, at a minimum.
Dakota Johnson in 'Fifty Shades of Grey'
Dakota Johnson is an American actress and model, best known for her role as Anastasia Steele in the Fifty Shades film series. The series' first film was released in 2015, based on the 2011 romance novel by British author E. L. James. Of all things from the film, Johnson took "lots of the underwear...they were comfortable." Supposedly they were made by the Hanro brand. That said, if it makes you feel better, she did take another item: "I do have a flogger in my house (it's in the garage with dust)."
Daisy Ridley in 'Star Wars'
Daisy Ridley is an English actress best known for her role as Rey in the final Star Wars films: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, and Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Although she did not mention which film specifically, she did reveal that she was given a lightsaber after production had concluded. She noted the gift on a 2019 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! that she was afraid of having the saber. "I worry that someone's going to track me down and break into my house, so I do need to say it's in a safe place," she added. "It's not in my house."
Adam Driver in 'Star Wars'
In the Star Wars sequel films, Adam Driver portrays Kylo Ren, the evil counterpart of protagonist Rey (played by Daisy Ridley), a powerful Sith warrior who is seduced by the dark side of the Force. Kylo Ren is a complex and conflicted character, and Driver brings a compelling intensity to the role. After Episodes VIII and IX completed filming, Driver admitted during a BBC Radio interview that of the Star Wars props, "I have lots of stuff...I for sure have a helmet. I have two helmets actually, a lightsaber." He also joked that, "I wear my helmets when I drive, just to confuse people."
Margot Robbie in 'Birds of Prey'
Harley Quinn is one of the most iconic characters in the DC Universe, and Margot Robbie brought the character to life in Birds of Prey. Robbie brought Harley's chaotic energy and unique sense of style to the big screen. In a 2020 MTV International interview, Robbie noted, "I took a pair of shorts that we didn't actually end up wearing as one of the costumes, but I actually really liked them." Sometimes props don't have to have meaning or actually be in the movie. Sometimes you just have to love something.
Aaron Paul in 'Need for Speed'
Aaron Paul may be best known as Jesse Pinkman in the AMC drama series Breaking Bad but he spent years previously honing his skills in commercials and smaller blockbuster films. In 2014, Paul starred in the film adaptation of the Need for Speed video game franchise. Once filming was completed, he took home the film's 1969 Ford Torino GT. The muscle car was powered by a 430 horsepower LS3 V8 backed by a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission. Paul also received a performance upgrade in terms of the car's suspension, cooling, and brakes.
Ashley Tisdale in 'High School Musical'
Ashley Tisdale was one of the stars of High School Musical. She played the popular girl, Sharpay, when the first (of three) High School Musical installment was released back in 2006. In 2018, Tisdale spoke about "taking" Sharpay's entire wardrobe when the original finished filming. Why did she take the entire lot? "Did I think I was going to wear them on the red carpet? Probably, at the time." Adding on, "A lot of our clothes are in hall of fames and they didn't have Sharpay's stuff and Disney tried so hard to get the clothes from me and I was like 'No, this is mine... they don't have any of the clothes from the first movie. I do." Tisdale doesn't seem too concerned about Disney's futile attempts to get her clothes back.
Vanessa Hudgens in 'High School Musical'
Vanessa Hudgens starred in the 2006 film High School Musical as Gabriella Montez. She played Zac Efron's on-screen love interest. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $225 million worldwide, and Hudgens' performance was praised by critics. Of all the wardrobes and props from the three films, Hudgens decided to keep the gifted "T" necklace, given to her by Efron's character. During an interview with Cosmopolitan in 2020, Hudgens realized, "I feel like I need to sell it for charity because it's literally sitting in a little bag rusting."
Jennifer Lawrence in 'The Hunger Games'
The final installment in the Hunger Games franchise sees Jennifer Lawrence return as the strong and determined Katniss Everdeen. In this film, Katniss must lead the rebellion against the tyrannical President Snow and put an end to the Hunger Games once and for all. Above all the incredible and artistic pieces seen in the film, Lawrence decided to keep the basics when answering an interview question during the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con: "I have the leather jacket — the leather hunting jacket — and my leather hunting boots."
Robert Downey Jr. in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'
Robert Downey Jr. has played the iconic superhero Iron Man/Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008. He first appeared as the character in the film Iron Man, and has gone on to reprise the role in The Avengers, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Downey Jr. surely has more Iron Man props to his name than mentioned, but he did tell Jimmy Kimmel in 2016 for a Captain America: Civil War press junket, that, "On Age of Ultron, there was a massive Avengers 'A' outside the Avengers center. I have it."
Chris Hemsworth in 'Thor: Ragnarok'
Chris Hemsworth is one of the most popular actors in the world. He is best known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Ragnarok is the third installment of the Thor franchise. When Jimmy Kimmel asked the star if he took the prized Mjolnir hammer home, Hemsworth replied, "A few ... about five... One's next to the toilet, one's on a mantelpiece somewhere." As there are too many prop hammers in his home now, Hemsworth's wife has banned the actor from brining any more home.
Chadwick Boseman in 'Black Panther'
Chadwick Boseman, who played the starring role of T'Challa/Black Panther in the 2018 film Black Panther, was a gifted actor who brought the iconic character to life on the big screen. His character, Black Panther, was also a large part of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel that same year, Boseman noted "I kept the beads, the Kimoyo beads... I have them on right now." The beads were symbolic of a Wakandan technology from the film.
Ryan Reynolds in 'Deadpool'
Ryan Reynolds was an excellent choice to play the title character in 2016's Deadpool. He brought the perfect mix of humor and charisma to the role and was a joy to watch on screen. When he was completing a film commentary with screenwriters, Reynolds admitted he stole one of two remaining suits as the other seven were destroyed during production. "I just walked off set with it and basically told them to go [expletive] themselves. I waited 10 years to do the movie. If they want to take the suit back, they can come try and take it from me... I was in very good shape when I shot the Deadpool movie and I felt confident that I could take out a 107-pound studio executive."
Sir Ian McKellen in 'Lord of the Rings'
Sir Ian McKellen is best known for his role as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. He reprised the role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). However, with respect to the first three released films, McKellen stated that he took the "front door key to Bag End (Bilbo Baggins's home), which I know [director] Peter Jackson is looking for, but will never find," in an "Ask Me Anything" thread on Reddit back in 2016. He also took some golden coins.
Robert Pattinson in 'Twilight'
Robert Pattinson is an English actor that appeared in a number of high-profile films, including the Twilight saga. Pattinson rose to prominence for his leading role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight series (2008–2012). The final Twilight film, Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012), was Pattinson's most commercially successful film, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide. During a 2012 press junket, the actor admitted to stealing the most valuable movie props. "I took a lot of underwear to be honest. I did that on all the movies...They have the best underwear and I have no idea where they get it from. I use it every day."
Gabrielle Union in 'Bring It On'
Gabrielle Union is a great dancer, amongst many other skills, which made her perfect for the lead role in Bring It On. The film is about a group of high school girls who are trying to win a national cheerleading competition. Union is the captain of the team, and she is determined to lead her squad to victory. In a 2017 People interview, in which she was asked what the oldest thing in her closest was, the answer was a bit whimsical. “Probably my wedding dress and maybe my Bring It On cheerleading outfit — not that I wear it!”
Daniel Radcliffe in 'Harry Potter'
Whatever role he "kills" now and in the future, Daniel Radcliffe will always be remembered for becoming everyone's favorite wizard, Harry Potter. Between 2001 and 2011, the Harry Potter films could not be ignored...which is completely understandable. Over eight films, the series made Warner Bros. extremely rich. The films alone made $7.7 billion in the international box office. Aside from making Radcliffe rich, he also got away with two of the series' most iconic props: two pairs of Harry's glasses. One pair was from the first film and the second came from the last. Of the first, Radcliffe commented, "The ones from the first film are absolutely tiny now, but they are very sweet. They are all lens-less as well. There was rarely ever any glass in the actual glasses because of filming problems with reflections."
Rupert Grint in 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'
In 2001, Rupert Grint starred in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone as Ron Weasley, one of Harry Potter's best friends. Ron is a fun-loving, loyal and brave character, and Grint's portrayal was perfect. Grint does recall trying to steal one crazy prop in a 2011 interview with Glamour UK. “I remember in the first film there was this amazing big golden dragon egg that opened up and was crystal inside. One afternoon I just put it in a pillowcase and smuggled it home. But a few days after, Warner Bros. started this massive hunt to find out who took the dragon egg, so I had to anonymously hand it in and hope no one would guess that it was me.”
Taron Egerton in 'Rocketman'
Taron Egerton was cast as Elton John in biopic Rocketman. The actor was praised for his performance in the role, with many saying he was born to play the part. Egerton has said that he feels a great responsibility to do justice to John's story, and he seems to have succeeded. In 2019, Egerton stated that he took one of the set's neon Troubadour signs. "[It] is obviously really cool and is exactly as it is in the club in LA, which I visited after the shot." Egerton's co-star, Richard Madden, suggested he hang the sign in his kitchen. It still hangs there today.
Chris Evans in 'Knives Out'
Chris Evans is one of the most popular actors in Hollywood, and he has starred in some of the biggest blockbusters and in some of the smaller, more intimate films of Hollywood. Such is the case with Knives Out, in which Evans gives a terrific performance as a man who is caught up in a murder mystery. While Evans never took any knives from set, he did get his character's classy attire. He added, "But I had permission, so that's not stealing...[I got] all the sweaters."
Julia Andrews in 'Mary Poppins'
In 1964, Julie Andrews starred as Mary Poppins in the Disney film of the same name. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. Andrews took the role of Mary Poppins very seriously, and she was very particular about the props she used in the film. Ironically, of all the iconic props she could have taken, she decided to take Mary Poppins' shoes. Are these shoes encased or placed in a shrine? No. They're being used as door stops.
Seth Rogen in 'This is the End'
Seth Rogen starred in 2013 comedy blockbuster, This is the End. Rogen played one in a group of friends who are forced to face the end of the world, after getting trapped in a house together during a Hollywood party gone wrong. Rogen was also one of the film's writers, producers, and its director. He drew on his own experiences of being in the entertainment industry to create his character. Although you may argue he was in charge at all times, Rogen did admit, "I stole a lot of the furniture from the set of that movie and shipped it from New Orleans back to Los Angeles and furnished our office and homes with it."
Chris Pratt in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1'
In 2014, Disney released the first volume of Guardians of the Galaxy. Up-and-coming actor, Chris Pratt, starred as the film's lead, Star-Lord. Before the film was released, Pratt stole his signature jacket and a few accompanying wardrobe pieces...for one incredible reason:
"I stole the jacket and some of the wardrobe so that, if this movie comes out and does what everyone hopes it can, I can follow the example of someone -- say, like, a Russell Wilson -- and go visit kids ... If it was a big enough movie to where it would mean something to a kid who’s sick in the hospital for Peter Quill or Star-Lord to come visit them, I’ll do that. I think that's awesome, man. That would give me real meaning for this movie, you know?"
Jennifer Aniston in 'Friends'
Jennifer Aniston's role as Rachel Green on the sitcom Friends made her a household name. Aniston played the character for 10 seasons, from 1994 to 2004. During her time on the show, Aniston became known for her comedic timing and her natural charisma. Aniston's character Rachel was a fashion-conscious and career-minded young woman, and the actress brought her own style to the role. She frequently wore designer clothes on the show, and her character's style was copied by many fans. However, of all things Aniston does admit to keeping after the show concluded, it was Central Perk's neon coffee sign.
